MJD Stitch Studio: October

Each month, we’re sharing one of our favorite threads, a coordinating stitch, and all the inspiration you need to bring your next canvas to life!

October’s Thread: CLASSIC COLORWORKS BELLE SOIE
We love Classic Colorworks Belle Soie when a canvas calls for a soft, silky finish! This 100% silk thread has a beautiful natural sheen that adds just the right amount of dimension without being too shiny. We've picked three of our favorite shades of brown for fall stitching, perfect for everything from cozy seasonal details to autumn-inspired canvases!

Belle Soie is made up of 12 individual strands, so you can separate them and use as many as you need for coverage. It's especially pretty for basketweave, satin stitches, and anywhere you want a smooth, polished look!

Our Recommended Stitch + Tips:

  • This month’s recommended stitch is Diagonal Roumanian Stitch!
  • The overlapping diagonal stitches create a beautiful woven effect that adds movement and dimension without feeling too busy.
  • Try it for cozy sweaters, fall accessories, or larger areas where you want to show off your thread.

What is Diagonal Roumanian Stitch?

Diagonal Roumanian Stitch is a decorative stitch that creates a woven, textured look with long diagonal stitches held in place by smaller anchoring stitches.

1. Start with a diagonal stitch. Bring your needle up through the canvas and work a long diagonal stitch across the mesh.

2. Add your anchoring stitch. After completing the long stitch, secure it with a short diagonal stitch that crosses over the center, creating a small woven effect.

3. Continue the pattern. Repeat the process, placing each long diagonal stitch parallel to the previous one and keeping your spacing consistent.

4. Build out your rows. Work across the canvas, staggering your stitches to create the repeating diagonal pattern.

5. Keep your tension even. Avoid pulling the anchoring stitches too tightly so the longer stitches lie smoothly against the canvas.
