Stitch of the Month: Woven Trellis

Stitch of the Month: Woven Trellis

Some stitches add texture, some add dimension, and some—like the Woven Trellis stitch—create both while adding a bit of intricate charm to your canvas.

This month, we're exploring a stitch that weaves together elegance and structure, makint it a perfect addition to any needlepoint project.

About Woven Trellis

The Woven Trellis stitch is a decorative needlepoint technique that creates an interlaced, lattice-like effect. It combines a foundation grid with an overlay of weaving, giving the final result a raised, almost embroidered look. The stitch works beautifully as a background, border, or even as a focal texture for floral or geometric designs.

How to Stitch Woven Trellis

  1. Work in Groups of Three - Each section of the stitch is made up of three stitches: two longer stitches that span over three canvas threads, and a shorter one that spans over two canvas threads.
  2. Stitch Diagonally - Start by placing your first stitch over three canvas threads, and finish the group with another long stitch over three threads.
  3. Align for a Woven Effect - The next row of stitches should be offset so that the stitches interlock, creating a trellis-like grid.
  4. Keep Your Tension Even - Maintaining even tension ensures that the pattern stays structured and doens't pull or distort the canvas.
  5. Experiment with Colors - Use a single color for a refined look or alternate colors for a more dynamic, woven appearance.

This stitch is stunning in areas where you want to add decorative interest without overwhelming the design. It's perfect for garden or floral canvases, emulating the look of latticework or trellises, and works beautifully behind monograms or letters as a unique background that enhances rather than competes with bold designs. It also makes a wonderful border or frame, adding a structured yet delicate effect to your work.

We're highlighting this stitch from our Spritz Cart Stitch Guide as we get ready to welcome spritz season. The Woven Trellis stitch is one of the many stitches included in the guide, curated by Jinny McAuliffe of Stitch Style Needlepoint, whose creativity always brings new life to our canvases. Happy Stitching!

XO, Morgan
