Stitch of the Month: Brick Stitch

Stitch of the Month: Brick Stitch

Brick by Brick

I'm thrilled to feature the brick stitch as this month's MJD Stitch of the Month!

The Brick Stitch is a classic stitch, and it's a stitch that has stood the test of time for good reason. Known for its versatility, the Brick Stitch can be used to create texture, bring dimension to your canvas, and is often a go-to for architectural elements. Whether you're working on a large background area or focusing on small details, Brick Stitch adds the perfect touch of dimension to your canvas!

Providing a beautiful balance between structure and texture, Brick Stitch's neat, zigzag pattern creates a subtle but impactful design that works wonderfully for backgrounds or specific design elements, like buildings or other straight-edged features. When using variegated thread, you can add even more texture and color to your canvas.

Vertical & Horizontal Brick Stitch Over 2

For Vertical Brick Stitch over 2...

1. Secure your thread and bring your needle to the front at the starting point.

2. Stitch upwards, skipping two canvas threads.

3. Move to the next stitch by moving your needle to the lower right and repeat the process. You'll notice this forming a zigzag pattern as you continue.

4. When you reach the end of the row, move your needle to the right at the same height as the first stitch, and repeat the process until your area is covered.

For Horizontal Brick Stitch over 2...

1. Secure your thread and bring your needle to the front of the canvas at the starting point.

2. Stitch horizontally over two canvas threads to the right.

3. Move to the opening just below and between the stitch you just made, and create another horizontal stitch over two.

4. Move your needle back to the left and repeat the process to fill in the area.

Tips & Tricks

Thread choice: A variegated thread can elevate this stitch, adding subtle color shifts that bring your canvas to life.

Play with Texture: By doubling up each stitch and stitching Double Brick, you can create even more dimension, which is perfect for larger sections or when you want the stitch to stand out.

Not sure if this stitch is for you? Use the white space around the canvas you're stitching to test out different stitch styles.

The Brick Stitch's structured appearance and versatility make it a wonderful addition to any needlepoint project. I hope you'll give it a try on your next canvas.

Happy Stitching!
