Needlepoint is more than just a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. Whether you’re stitching poolside, in a cozy nook with a latte, or sneaking in a few stitches between Zoom calls, having the right accessories makes all the difference. These are our go-to needlepoint tools that not only make stitching smoother but also let you add a little of your personality to your project stash. Let’s dive in!
Project Bag: The MVP of On-the-Go Stitching
Project bags are great for grab and go stitching, but even when I’m not traveling, I use project bags to keep my WIPs organized at home. These zippered pouches keep your canvas, threads, scissors, and tools all in one tidy spot, whether you’re on the go or stitching from your couch. Project bags are also key for keeping your WIP projected from a spill (my worst fear!) - I love the peace of mind that comes with knowing my needlepoint is safely stashed. From an old favorite Stitch & B*tch to our latest addition the Bow Bag a good project bag keeps your setup organized, protected, and always ready for your next stitching sesh.
Needle Threader: A Small Tool That Makes a Big Difference
Threading a needle can be one of the trickier parts of needlepoint especially when working with delicate or fraying threads. A needle threader takes the hassle out of the process, making it quicker and easier to get started. Whether you're using silk, wool, or specialty thread, this handy tool adds convenience to your stitching routine. Our MJD Needle Threaders are all attached to a cute charm because I found a loose needle threader was always getting lost in my project bag.
Stretcher Bars: Keep Your Canvas Smooth and Secure
A well-stretched canvas makes all the difference in your stitching experience. Stretcher bars provide the structure needed to keep your canvas taut and stable, helping your stitches stay even, and help prevent your canvas from warping. They’re a reliable tool that supports your work from the first stitch to the last - ensuring a polished result every time. Some stitchers favor stretcher bars because it gives them something more sturdy to hold on to while stitching their project. If you’re exploring stretcher bars for your next project - keep the size of your canvas in mind. At MJD we list the size stretcher bars you’ll need under “product details” on our website, but a good rule of thumb is to add 4 inches to the size of the design to get the stretcher bar size. Needle Minder: Practical, Stylish, and Incredibly Useful
The best accessory you didn’t know you needed! A needle minder is a tool that keeps your needle in place when you’re not stitching. I have a needle minder attached to my canvas at all times, and usually an extra in the bottom of my project bag for my backup needles. With designs ranging from some of our favorite MJD canvas designs to stand alone icons, it’s a functional accessory and a fun way to show off your personality while stitching. I’ll admit a few MJD needle minders can even be found on my fridge - they work as functioning magnets in addition to being a great needlepoint accessory!
Laying Tool: The Secret to Smooth, Even Stitches
If you’ve ever admired how even someone’s stitches look with specialty threads - spoiler alert - they’re probably using a laying tool. This accessory helps you when you’re stitching with thread like ribbon since it helps guide the strand to stay flat, giving your needlepoint that professional finish. I’ve found a laying tool especially helpful when stitching with speciality threads like neon rays; sometimes they don’t lay quite the way you want them to and that’s where this accessory comes in handy! We love our bow laying tool because it’s got great weight and it’s cute!
Seam Ripper: For Precision, Patience, and a Perfect Canvas
Mistakes happen, even to the best stitchers. While I hope the seam ripper isn't a tool you're reaching for often, it’s a relief to have on hand for those moments when you have to rip out a few rows (often referred to as ‘frogging’ because you ‘rip-it, rip-it, rip-it’). This tiny tool lets you undo a stitch (or a few) without tearing your canvas or unraveling into frustration. It's the stitcher's version of a Ctrl+Z!
Having the right accessories make needlepointing easier and more enjoyable! From keeping your tools organized to perfecting your stitches, each item adds a little extra joy to your stitching routine.
