Stitch of the Month: Skip Tent

Stitch of the Month: Skip Tent

Skip into Detail

I'm excited to introduce Skip Tent, an elegant yet approachable stitch, as our next MJD Stitch of the Month!

The Skip Tent stitch is often used to add texture, dimension, and visual interest to your needlepoint canvas. Perfect for areas where a light stitch would work best, the Skip Tent stitch adds depth without overwhelming the design.

I find that Skip Tent is the perfect progression from Basketweave because it is worked in a diagonal direction. I love using it as a background stitch or in a large area of my canvas because it doesn't distract from the main elements of the canvas.

1. Tent Stitch on the Diagonal

As you would with Basketweave, begin by stitching a series of skip tent stitches on the diagonal.

2. Skip & Stitch

Skip the next diagonal of canvas intersections and tent stitch the following diagonal set of intersections.

3. Repeat

Ensure your skipped stitches align diagonally to create a comprehensive pattern.

Tips & Tricks

Thread choice

Use a lighter thread for a more delicate appearance, and a heavier thread for a bolder look.

Color Play

Experiment with color variations by combining two sets of Skip Tent stitches for a more dynamic and full coverage look.

Not sure this stitch is for you?

I always recommend making use of the blank canvas area around the desing on your canvas to try out different stitches you my want to use.

The Skip Tent stitch is a versatile stitch. Its light texture and quick execution make it an excellent option for backgrounds and large areas. I hope you consider it for one of your next stitching projects!

Happy Stitching!
