Before we dive in, I want to share a bit about how we travel: we usually have a few spots in mind to see or plan a meal around, but we love walking and wandering. Our vacations tend to be laid-back and spontaneous, with a lot of strolling, snacking, and sipping. Having someone in your group who is comfortable speaking Spanish is a huge plus—while many locals are gracious and helpful, it makes navigating even easier.
We stayed in Roma Norte at Xoma Boutique by Viadora. We chose it because we wanted a hotel with a pool, and it more than delivered. Our room was massive—two bedrooms, a kitchenette, and a living room. We definitely didn't need all that space, but it would be perfect for a family. The staff were absolutely wonderful, and the location made it easy to explore the neighborhood on foot.
Saturday
We hit the ground running with lunch at Taquería Orinoco, one of my favorite meals of the trip. Simple, flavorful, and the perfect start.
Later, we stopped for a cocktail at Traspatio, a vibey, open-air bar tucked away from the street—exactly the kind of place that makes you feel like you've found a hidden gem.
Dinner was at Café Arixi, where I highly recommend ordering the cacio e pepe. Unexpectedly amazing for a pasta in Mexico City.
Sunday
We started the day with a visit to three different markets. They were full of colorful finds, local crafts, and great people-watching.
Lunch was at Taquería Los Cocuyos, a street food favorite and well worth the hype. Messy, flavorful, unforgettable.
Later, we headed to Balcón del Zócalo, a rooftop bar with incredible views of the city. The drinks were next level—we caught golden hour and toasted to a perfect day.
Dinner that night was at Em, our splurge of the trip, and well worth it. We jokingly called it my birthday dinner, and I treated myself to the Mexican wine pairing, which was fabulous. A special way to end the weekend.
Monday
We mixed a little work with a lot of relaxing—stitched for a bit and laid poolside in the afternoon. That evening, we took a long walk through Condesa, then grabbed pizza at Pizzas Nosferatu. If you're a beer lover, there's a huge craft beer shop next door where you can pick out a can (or several) to pair with your pie.
Tuesday
We spent most of the day outdoors—walking around Chapultepec Castle, visiting the zoo (which had a capybara!), and taking in so much art and nature throughout the park. It was one of those perfect days of unplanned wandering.
We capped it off with drinks and appetizers at Balmori, a rooftop spot with a fun vibe. It was a favorite for both the setting and the backgammon games over cocktails.
Wednesday
We flew back to Tampa with no issues—an easy direct flight home after a really special trip.
A Few of My Favorite Things
- How quiet it was. For such a huge city, it didn't feel loud or chaotic.
- Low skyline. The buildings weren't tall, so you never felt boxed in.
- Dogs everywhere. If you know me, you know this was a highlight.
- Affordability. It was a fairly inexpensive trip, and could've been done even more affordably.
- The art and architecture. Every corner felt vibrant and full of life.
Whether you're a planner or a wanderer, Mexico City is the kind of place that welcomes both. I'd go back in a heartbeat—and maybe stay in the same spot again, too.
XO, Morgan
